Norma retired on Dec. 15, 1984, after 18 years of caring service as a nurse's aide at the hospital in Aurora. She was known as the "Jelly Lady" of Aurora, as she made hundreds of jars of homemade jelly, mostly from elderberries, which she picked herself. She gave her wonderful jelly to everyone she came in contact with. She gave so much away that her husband, Dale Hilton (whom she married in 1987) asked if they could please keep some for him to eat.
Norma was the most loving and giving person anyone has ever known. When she had nothing more to give in a worldly sense, she still gave her beautiful smiles and compliments. She loved God's children and especially the babies. She never judged people on their outward looks, but rather looked for the beauty inside. She tried to see good in everyone and love them just the way they were. She loved the Lord and was blessed with a talent for the piano that could only have come from her Lord. She could play (by ear) any spiritual song that she had ever heard. If she had not heard it, she could hear it once and play it. Her grandson once tried to trick her and started naming the songs in an old hymnal one page at a time. She knew them all.
After a stroke, she made up a joke about her name. She said her name was "Normal" until the dropped off the "L". She also would laughingly tell you that she was a Hilton, but not the rich Hiltons. What a pure and unselfish person she was. How blessed we, her family, have been to be able to have her here for 95 years.
Her body will be returned from Broken Arrow, Okla., where she has been since 2001, and will be laid to rest next to her husband, Dale Hilton, at the Aurora cemetery. Her soul is at rest and she now lives in heaven, wrapped int he arms of the Lord.
Visitation will be at Crafton-Cantrell Funeral Home in Aurora, between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19.
