These Obituaries are reprinted from The Lawrence County Record, which is Mt. Vernon, MO hometown newspaper. The newspaper, published once a week includes the weekly deaths of Lawrence County residents & their families. In an effort to maintain Mt. Vernon, MO Genealogy I have only reprinted the Mt. Vernon Deaths. I will list these alphabetically and I will add to these on a regular basis so be sure to check back often.

Eldred Elbert Gallagher
Eldred Elbert Gallagher, 80, Mt. Vernon, died Thursday, April 29, 2010. He was born Oct. 18, 1929, in Raton, N.M., to John M. and Ada (Carr) Gallagher. He was a United States Army veteran, serving in the Korean War. He retired from the Missouri Department of Conservation.
He married Joretta F. Hembree Jan. 30., 1955, in Republic.
Survivors include four children, Janis A. Young, Minnesota, and Beverly J. Gallagher, Gary L. Gallagher Susan J. Streit, all of Missouri; one brother, James E. Gallagher, Missouri; one half-brother, Vincent Gallagher, New Jersey; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Services were Sunday, May 2, at Meadors Funeral Home, Republic. Burial with military honors, was in Evergreen Cemetery, Republic.
Memorials are suggested to the Disabled American Veterans, in care of the funeral home.
Bessie Rebecca Garner
Bessie Rebecca Garner, Mt. Vernon, 91, died at 11:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, at Cox South, Springfield. She was born May 31, 1917, in Marionville to Isaiah Franklin and Abby (Michel) Ruckman. She was a 1936 graduate of Marionville High School, where she was valedictorian of her class.
She taught school at White Hall School, worked at Ben Franklin Store in Mt. Vernon for more than 10 years, volunteered in the gift shop at Missouri Rehabilitation Center and was in the Bell choir at First United Methodist Church, where she was a longtime member.
She married Albert Edward Garner Dec. 19, 1936, in Mt. Vernon. He died May 20, 1969.
Survivors include five daughters, Julie Cleveland, Diana Younts and Pamela Robertson, all of Mt. Vernon, and Rosemary Johnson and Sharon Gwin, both of Miller; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one sister, five brothers and one grandson.
Services were Tuesday, Dec. 9, in Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home, Mt. Vernon. Burial was in the Mt. Vernon City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Barry-Lawrence Regional Library, in care of the funeral home.
Henry Lawrence Garner

Henry Lawrence Garner - Mt. Vernon, 91, died at 10:50 p.m. Monday, March 26, 2007, in the Lawrence County Manor, Mt. Vernon.
He was born on Aug. 10, 1915, in Lawrence County to Denny and Nannie (Riggins) Garner. He was a World War II Army veteran radio operator, a beef farmer, plant supervisor for Southwest Heating and Air manufacturing in Aurora, retiring in 1987, and was a member of the Summit Baptist Church.
He married Marjorie Hood in July 1939 in Mt. Vernon. She preceded him in death on May 24, 1985.
Survivors include three daughters, Vonda Pearlman, Tulsa, Okla., Kay Robinson and husband, Newt, Stewartsville, and Marsha Druce and husband Rodney, Troy; two sons, Dale Garner and wife, Mary, and Wally Garner and wife, Gloria, all of Mt. Vernon,; two sisters-in-law, Maxine Garner, Mt. Vernon, and Dorothy Pilkenton and husband, Leon, Wichita, Kan.; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
His parents, one son, Dan Henry Garner, three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
Funeral services, under the direction of Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home, were Thursday, March 29, in Summit Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Holman officiating. Burial with full military honors, followed in Summit Cemetery.
Alma Ruth Garoutte
Alma Ruth Garoutte - Mt. Vernon, 84, passed away at 2:40 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, 2007, in the Mt. Vernon Place Care Center.
Alma was born Sept. 28, 1922, in Wetumka, Okla., to William Perry and Nettie Mabel (Hindman) Wilson. She was a resident of the Mt. Vernon and Stotts City area, was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church, Mt. Vernon.
On Jan. 17, 1941, she married John Hubert Garoutte in Claremont, Calif. He preceded her in death on march 11, 1995.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol Lea Hartley, Aurora, and Cathy Sheldon, Bonne Terre; three sons, Don Garoutte and wife Sandy, and Duane Garoutte and wife Rita, all of Mt. Vernon, and Dennis Garouttte and wife, Susan, Cabot Ark.; two sisters, Quanetta Grant, state of California, and Venita Howard, state of Arizona; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Her parents, seven brothers and sisters and one grandson, Lonnie Wayne Hartley, preceded her in death.
Services were Tuesday, Sept 25, in the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home, Mt. Vernon, with the Rev. Tim Burgess officiating. Burial was in the Garoutte Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the John Taylor Senior Center, Mt. Vernon, in care of the funeral home.

Keith Flether Grandon
Keith Fletcher Grandon, 75, Mt. Vernon, formerly of Goodman, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, at the Missouri Veterans' Home/Mt. Vernon.
He was born March 1, 1934, in Hutchinson, Kan., to Donald Fletcher and Beaula Stephens. At the age of 6 he was adopted by Charles and Thelma Grandon. He graduated from Neosho High School. He served in both the United States Air Force and Navy. He retired March 1, 1989, from the postal service in Neosho.
Survivors include one son, Stanley Grandon, Springfield; one daughter, Diane McRae, Carthage; one sister, Sally Mahaney, Austin, Texas; two brothers, Ozzie Reed, Oklahoma City, Okla., and Warren Arnold, Baton Rouge, La.; and two grandchildren.
Services were Tuesday, Feb. 9, in the Anderson Chapel of the Ozark Funeral Home. Graveside services, with military honors, will be Wednesday, Feb. 10, at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield.
Pauline Gwin
Pauline Gwin - Mt. Vernon, 83, passed away at 7:56 p.m. Sunday, March 25, 2007, in St. John’s Hospital, Springfield.
She was born on Feb. 28, 1924, in Arnette, Okla., to Paul and Gladys (Nuttle) Jones. She was a retired hairdresser and a homemaker. She enjoyed quilting, needlework, puzzles and computer games.
On Nov. 22, 1963 she married Ralph Gwin in Harlingen, Texas. He survives of the home.
Additional survivors include one daughter, Marti Ruark and husband, Barry, Miller; three sons, James Safley and wife, Ellen, Siloam Springs, Ark., John Safley and wife, Connie, Pearl, Miss., and Tom Safley and wife, Linda, Bixby, Okla.; two sisters, Alice Tuttle, Houston, Texas, and Bobbie Smith, Marbles Falls, Texas; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
Her parents, three brothers, Albert “Red” Jones, Bill Jones and Arnold Jones preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 29, in the Morris-Leiman-Mosher Funeral Home, Miller, with the Rev. Bob Holman officiating. Burial will follow in the Miller Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, in the funeral home chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gideons, in care of the funeral home.
