These Obituaries are reprinted from The Lawrence County Record, which is Mt. Vernon, MO hometown newspaper. The newspaper, published once a week includes the weekly deaths of Lawrence County residents & their families. In an effort to maintain Mt. Vernon, MO Genealogy I have only reprinted the Mt. Vernon Deaths. Other Lawrence County deaths can be located elsewhere in this blog. I will list these alphabetically and I will add to these on a regular basis so be sure to check back often.

Ethel "Ernestine" Jenkins
Ethel "Ernestine" Jenkins, 90, Mt. Vernon, died at 3:50 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, in the Lawrence County Manor, Mt. Vernon.
She was born April 20, 1919, in Miller to Ernest Jefferson and Lovie Jane (Abraham) Hunter. She was a 1938 graduate of Miller High School, worked for the Missouri Rehabilitation Center, U.S.Envelope and the Mt. Vernon MFA grocery store, in the meat department. She was a member of Onward Methodist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Connie Brown, Everton, Jane Gossett, Ash Grove, and Patty Cornell, Wentworth; two sisters, Edna Beach, Greenfield, and Helen Faucett, Mt. Vernon; one brother, Carl Hunter, Coppell, Texas; four stepchildren; Donna Harris, Billie Wallace, Gene Jenkins and Joyce Forsyth; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.
Graveside services were Monday, Sept. 21, in Miller Memorial Gardens Cemetery, under direction of Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home, Mt. Vernon.
Memorial donations may be made to Onward Methodist Church, in care of the funeral home.
Herbert M. Johnson
Herbert M. Johnson, age 89, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 6:12 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, at St. John's Regional Health Center in Springfield. He was born July 26, 1920, in Paris Springs, the son of William O. and Almeda (Meismer) Johnson.
Herbert served his country in the United States Army during World War II, and he worked for Carnation Canning Company in Mt. Vernon for 30 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 137 of Mt. Vernon, a member of the Teamsters Union and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mt. Vernon. On Oct. 4, 1941, he married Freda Blanch Hill of Marionville.
Those surviving him include his wife of 68 years, Freda, Mt. Vernon; one daughter, Sharon Schnake and her husband, Leeroy, of Ludlow; one son, Gary Johnson and his wife, Helen of Lee's Summit; four grandchildren, Carrie Gilliland, Shari Wells, Stuart Johnson and Rebekkah Stuteville; seven great-gandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. His parents and eight borthers and sisters preceded him in death.
Funeral services were Monday, Oct. 5, in the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home, Mt. Vernon. Burial, with military honors, was in the Mt. Vernon City Cemetery.

Rodney Gene Johnson
Rodney Gene Johnson - Mt. Vernon, 36, died at 8:50 a.m. Friday, Sept. 21, 2007, in his residence.
He was born June 17, 1971, in Tulsa, Okla., to Frank and Loviena (Warren) Johnson. He was a 1990 graduate of Alton High School and was employed by Drury University in Springfield, where he was named an employee of the month in 2006. He was a member of the Smyrna Free Will Baptist Church, Alton.
He married Deidere Ann Johnson March 16, 2002, in Harrison, Ark. She survives.
Additional survivors include one daughter, Melissa Chesmore, Mt. Vernon, and his mother Loviena Strain, Alton.
He was preceded in death by his father, stepfather Herbert Strain and grandparents.
Services were Tuesday, Sept. 25, in Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home, Mt. Vernon, with John Cowherd officiating. Additional services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, in Clary Funeral Home, Alton. Burial will be in Smith Cemetery, Alton, under direction of Fossett- Mosher Funeral Home, Mt. Vernon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home.
Virginia Cleta Johnson
Virginia Cleta Johnson, 93, Mt. Vernon, passed away at 7:53 a.m. Monday, April 12, 2010, at the Lawrence County Manor, Mt. Vernon. She was born Aug. 14, 1916, in Greene County, the daughter of Elmer and Texa (Mynatt) West. Virginia married Olan Francis Johnson Jan. 23, 1936. He preceded her in death in February 1984. She was a homemaker and a member of the Onward United Methodist Church.
Those survivng her include two daughters, Sharlyn Emerson of Mt. Vernon and Betty Wood and her husband, Don, of Billings; four grandchildren, Greg Prater, Stephanie Colley, Chris Prater and Kevin Wood; five great-grandchildren, Jason Prater, Erika Elmore, Brandon Colley, Rachel Colley and Jared Prater; and four great-great-grandchildren, Sydnee, Shaye and Sophie Prater, and Joey Elmore. Also preceding her in death were her parents; four sisters, Irene Cardwell, Thelma Winn, Faye Tiller and Jewell Cropper; and two brothers, Arvel and Theodore West.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, at the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home, Mt. Vernon, with burial at Rock Prairie Cemetery at Halltown.
Memorial donations may be made to the Onward United Methodist Church, in care of the funeral home.

Dr. Norman E. Justus
Dr. Norman E. Justus, 83, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 3:05 p.m. Friday, June 26, 2009, in Cox Monett.
Dr. Justus was born Jan. 1, 1926, near Marionville to Frank and Anna (Rowe) Justus. He graduated from Verona High School in 1943; he retired as captain from the United States Navy, serving during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1954 and Oklahoma State University in 1958.
Dr. Justus was a research agronomist with the United States Department of Agriculture for seven years and then served as superintendent of the University of Missouri Southwest Research Center for 23 years. He taught Sunday school in the First Baptist Church of Mt. Vernon, where he was a member for more than 40 years.
He married Annabelle Crouch on Sept. 7, 1946, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 15, 2006. His parents and a son, John Robert Justus, also preceded him in death.
Survivors include two sons and their spouses, Jackie and Rosemary Justus of Bath, Pa., and Joel and Dana Jusus, Aurora; one sister, Rosemary Arnold and her husband, Thomas, of Joplin; two brothers, Robert Justus and his wife, Mary, and Jerald Justus, all of Verona; six grandchildren, Jeremy Justus of Indianapolis, Ind., Julie Justus of Arlington, VA., Jennifer Doubleday and husband Sonny of Mt. Vernon, Jake Justus of Springfield, Joshua Justus and wife Stephanie of Verona, and Jared Justus of Aurora; and three great-grandchildren, Dallas and Dalton Doubleday of Mt. Vernon, and Iris Justus of Indianapolis.
Services were Tuesday, June 30, in the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home, Mt. Vernon, with the Rev. Tim Burgess officiating. Burial, with full military honors, was in Mt. Vernon IOOF Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the First Baptist Church Endowment Fund or the Missouri Baptist Children's Home, in care of the funeral home.
